My clutch started slipping so I pulled the drivetrain and inside the
snout I found two seals and no split ring to hold them in and some
grooves worn in the top of the inside of the snout.
Scott and everybody,
i hope that everybody realizes that the lack of a split ring "to hold them
in" is NOT THE PROBLEM.
The problem is installing a second seal inside a stock snout. There is only
room for one seal. The space inside the snout where the split ring goes is
greater in ID than where the first seal goes. That means the second seal is
LOOSE inside the snout and will spin in there whether the split ring is there or
not. And there is no place for the split ring to be held tight if a second
seal is installed. It will fall out.
Yes vendor supplied aftermarket snouts have a place for the second seal to
go, but the stock snouts don't.
