<VV> points ignition maintenance philosophy

What is the current generation philosophy on points ignition maintenance?  Do you change them on a regular basis or only as needed?  My car's running just fine but it's been a long while since I've had a car with points and I was wondering.  Should I pull the cap and check things on a schedule or only when there's a symptom?  Thanks in advance!
