Smitty Says: Having bought only one new car in my life I am hardly in a position to comment on a lot of this. I do respect John's position. Being an old Sailor I hate to hear comments about drunken Sailors. They aren't all drunks. My last experience in buying a new car came at the request of one of my daughters who asked me to support her as she shopped. We went into a dealer showroom to talk about a specific car. The salesman asked for the keys to her trade-in so they could check it out. In about 30 minutes she had made no progress toward getting any concessions on the overpriced car so she decided to leave. Guess what? They could not find the keys or even the car. The salesman hung in there with his pitch about how we should buy the new one We heard everything from "Fred" had it on a test drive, to "John" took it to the lift. She got upset and started crying and I got pi**d off. I demanded the keys and started getting loud, finally shifting into the Navy seaman
communication system and telling them I was going to start going through desks looking for the keys. The threatened to call the cops and I invited them to do just that but meanwhile somebody was going to s**t those keys. I don't know how many potential customers left while I was on the step. I actually saw the Sales manager take the keys out of his drawer and hand them to a salesman who brought them to me.
Like I said, my experience is limited, but if you don't think it was colored by that one, you would be wrong.
