The ATF in the gearbox was Chrysler's way to make their rather robust
manual gearboxes (such as the A833 4-sp) shift a little easier,
especially in colder climates when the chill would make a gearbox
shift like it was filled with tar.

Later, Chrysler sent down a memo that the big gearboxes, especially
those behind stronger V8s, were to be drained and refilled with gear
lube whenever a car fitted with an ATF-filled gearbox came in for
service. Excessive wear and gear crunch were unacceptable results
in gearboxes using ATF especially when hi-perf engines were in front
of them. Later gearboxes that were designed to use lighter gear
lubes will work well with ATF. Chrysler has a gear lube now that's
used in their transaxles which is about the same weight as ATF but
looks and smells like standard gear lube.

On a lighter note:

My Yugo has a tag that specifies 10w-30 motor oil in the
transaxle. 124,000 miles, transaxle still in good shape... although
it uses no hypoid gears, so I would imagine that motor oil may well
work out OK there since the car weighs almost nothing and has a
sewing machine for an engine... or maybe the Serbs simply didn't have
easy access to gear lube...?

However, the Vairs still get std weight gear lube in their transaxles.
