<VV> Rocker panel surgery on 66 Ragtop, etc

Neil,

These are usually two complicated and expensive repairs. You can see some
photos of what was done to my car here:

http://www.corvairkid.com/610767001602.htm

The rocker panels are a large part of the structural stiffness of a
convertible. So any repair there should not merely be cosmetic. Replacement
panels are available. The welding task here is complicated due to the number
of welds and the critical need to keep the rest of the body still so that it
does not sag. A jig is usually used.

As for the glove box area, I assume it is the windshield cowl panel area.
That is not a large panel but time consuming to repair because the
windshield has to be removed and welding in a replacement is complicated due
to the need to get the curvature just right (to match the glass). And,
unfortunately, the replacement panel available is not at the correct angle
exactly. Doug Barneck (VV member) had to do this repair recently and can
share some info and photos.

Subject: <VV> Rocker panel surgery on 66 Ragtop, etc

Hello:

I have a 66 corsa Convert project. 2 questions multiple parts:

A) It is pretty solid all around and has new floors but there are rust holes
thru the Right side rocker ( the size of your fist In both wheel wells and
also thru the side. There is maybe 60-70% of the metal still there but some
surgery is required and I am 1) not a body man and 2) not a welder. Any
suggestions? (short of taking it to a body shop)

B) If you lay on your back on the floor looking under the dash there is some
old bondo repair in the seam high up behind the glove box. I don't know how
far it goes or what is involved in getting in there to clean it up and fix
it properly.

Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!

Neil
