Ned,
When I was teaching electricity for GM in the 70s our wiring diagrams
often showed multiple wiring for the same circuit because:
- they were showing the different internal switch connections for
various operating modes,
- they were showing different wiring used for optional equipment
[gages, idiot lights, etc.].
- they showed different sensors for various applications [engines,
accessories, operating temp, etc.]
Also, the location of the device on the wiring diagram did not
necessarily correspond with the location of the item on the car.
Also, remember that the diagrams were never guaranteed to be
correct...after all, they were drawn by man.
Hope this helps,

I'm getting close to getting the revised, colorized wiring diagrams
finished for 1964 car, but I've run into a bit of a problem. If you
look at the engine wiring diagram in the shop manual, there are three
engine temperature "sensors" at the top of the page, to the left of the
coil. At first, I thought the middle one was the oil pressure switch,
but it's located near the generator. So, could an EM guy please explain
what these three senders are for?
Thanks,
Ned
