I am working on my son's 63 Monza, original
carbs, new points, plugs and electric fuel pump. I finally got the @#$@#%
thing to crank at 8 deg and then had to turn the distributor all the way to
the coil to get it to level off.

Am I correct in assuming that the car was previously running and then you
installed points, plugs and elec fuel pump and now these are the problems
you're having?
A good starting point for the timing is 10 deg BTDC. So 8 is good too.
BUT turning the dist back to the coil is ADVANCING the timing, and A LOT!!!
Is this what you want to do? I don't know just what you mean by "level off"

She is spitting out of the primary carb
after running for a short time and then seems to not be idling high enough
then dies off.

Check that your plug wires aren't switched.
Sounds like the timing is off. You can speed up the idle at the carbs
temporarily to keep it running.

What is the usual pressure for a 63 Monza
Fuel pressure? Stock pump is 4-5 lbs at idle to 1000 rpm. Best for you if
you remove a line at one of the carbs and see if you get about one pint ( into
a container) in 40 seconds or less, at cranking speeds.

and is there
anywhere that I can get a solid idea of the HP on this model, 102 or 110?
Thanks guys.

Well 1963 Monzas never were 110 hp, so yours could be either an 80 hp or a
102. Also possibly an 84 hp if a PG. What is the engine suffix code located
just ahead of the std fuel pump location? That should help identify the engine.
Is the engine the original or a different eng?
