A... Possibly. Time will tell. If you drop a valve seat anytime soon,
you'll know what to blame it on.

Why would the belt have come loose if it was tight yesterday?

A... It was likely TOO tight. They flip upside down, wear real fast and
either break or fly off under those conditions. Appropriate tightness is
relatively loose - most say so that you can turn the gen/alt fan with one
finger.

  What should I do now?

A. Three things. 1 intall NEW belt to correct tightness. 2 install the
"Corvair Wrench" in the glove box (the one needed to replace a belt on the
road) as insurance policy. 2 dirve on, if a seat falls out later - deal
with it then.

Oh, after 300 or so miles on the new belt, re-check the tension as they
sometimes stretch a bit. I guess that would make 4 things... GRIN
