Awhile back(1990) I had an 83 AMC Eagle........it would shut off every time
you took your foot off the gas pedal, simply quit! A bad situation when my
wife was using the car to deliver mail, 500 stops a day. I had done several
things to the car including a rebuilt carb, new fuel pump, and filter to no
avail.
Took it to a dealer to do a diagnostic on the car and tell me what was
wrong with it.
He gave me an 8 page printout detailing what they found wrong with the car
and told me they could fix me right up for $850.
The list included items like valve cover gasket, belts, hoses, and radiator
flush, but nothing to my knowledge that could even remotely have anything
to do with the problem.
I said..."Tell you what, go right ahead, and if it fixes the problem, I'll
pay the bill, if it doesn't, I don't owe you anything!" What insued was a
long and very loud arguement. Needless to say, I paid $40 for a worthless
diagnosis.
A few weeks later I discovered the problem was nothing more than a rusty
gas cap. The gas cap had a purge valve in it so the closed system could
"breath". Motor RPM's would slow and it would quit sucking gas to the motor.
Dealer didn't have a clue, but they were certainly willing to have me pay
for their time just trying various things............

haven't trusted a dealer since..........
