Hi,
The next phase of research is now underway, and that involves measuring the
lengths of as many original cables as I can find. Obviously it will be much
easier to do this for cables that have been removed from cars already...
If you have an original cable or two like this--perhaps removed from a car
that was parted out, or perhaps because the cable was replaced--it will be
useful, as long as we can tell what each cable is (by at least a remnant of
the part number stamped with white paint).
The measurement to make is from the center of the hole on each end of the
cable. It's a little tough to measure from the center of a hole though so
it's easier to measure from one side of each hole (same side, of course).
And, importantly, the cable must be stretched out so that it is as straight
as possible, for accuracy. This is especially important because the length
difference between different part numbers is often no more than one inch.
The point in doing this is to help ensure that the reproduction cables are
made with the correct lengths. The main reason that Chevy changed part
numbers was to lengthen the cables slightly.
Thanks,
--Kent
P.S. There is one cable that I have not yet seen at all so bonus points if
you have one. The part number is 2987283. It was a negative cable, used in
early '65 only, for cars equipped with RPO T60 (heavy duty battery).
