Welcome to the group!  They didn't teach "linkage theory" at ASE??  GGG

Most likely it's the "coupler / universial type joint"  at the transaxle,  
BUT  after 43 years....especially with only 68k  miles...you know it's been 
shifted a million times...so check the whole shifting linkage..bushing may be gone 
by now...
