The rationale for the spring loaded fan belt tensioner is for those who race
or drive their Corvair hard. I, like many, have no problems with the stock,
fixed idler pulley but I also don't race my Corvairs so they seldom see
anything about 4000 rpm.
Pulleys that run true and proper belt tension are the keys to making the
stock system work well. Lightweight components such as a magnesium fan and
alternator help to lighten the loading of the belt by reducing inetia and
thus minimize belt stretch when changing engine speed rapidly.
Those that race or drive hard are constantly and rapidly changing engine
speed and thus the reason a active belt tensioner could be useful. The belt
tensioner however isn't a fix for pulleys that are not running true or out
of alignment.
