The Corvair hump was, as all of us who have worked underneath them know,  was 
necessary to run things like shift rods, brake lines, (later on)  
heater/defroster ducts, etc. from the front to the back. With Front Wheel Drive  cars, 
you still need to get the engine exhaust to the back as well as many of  the 
items mentioned above. Also, as Chris mentioned, a totally flat floor  would be 
like driving an oil can around. The hump, even the short one like the  Corvair 
has, provides room below and stiffness. Can you imagine a late  convertible 
with a totally flat floor? On second thought, don't. -  Seth
