Hi folks,

It was great seeing many of you in Buffalo at the Stock Corvair Group
meeting and at the Annual Stock Corvair Event. We sure saw and documented
some amazingly original cars!

The convention was also productive on the topic of Fisher Body tag accessory
code research:

1) Jim Allen's '65 Corsa convertible is equipped with the very rare (for
'65) deluxe rear seat belts. His car has the expected 5Y code on the Fisher
tag and he also provided me a copy of the original typed invoice, which
lists the option. We can now be 100% certain that 5Y is the code for this
for 1965. And, Jim's car tells us that 5Y indicates front AND rear deluxe
belts (RPOs A49 + A47) because his car's tag does not have 5W, which is used
for front deluxe belts only (A49). This means that 5Y always means front and
rear deluxe belts since this code is used in '66 and '67 for the combined
option (RPO A39).

2) Bob Bentz provided a body tag from a '66 500 sedan that has the 3A code,
which confirms that this code was indeed used in '66 for factory rear door
armrests (as well as '65).

And just after the convention:

3) Dave Leiter was able to confirm that 2H represents RPO C48, heater
delete, in 1965.

Previously, we also learned the following:

4) Dave Ziegler and Chris Nicholson were both able to confirm that 1L
indicates RPO A67, fold-down rear seat, for non-Monzas in 1963.

5) Dennis Dorogi provided an extremely rare Fisher Body Buyout sheet from
his 1965 Monza sedan. The sheet provided the two remaining seat belt-related
codes for 1965:
5G: RPO A64, standard rear seat belts
5Y: RPO A47, deluxe rear seat belts

6) Greg Schupfer was able to confirm that 2R represents RPO U80, rear seat
speaker, in 1967.

All six pieces of information have been incorporated into the online version
of the article on my web site at www.corvairkid.com.

As I mentioned at the SCG meeting, now is the time to go digging through any
Corvair boneyards that you have access to. Can someone commit to visiting
the Corvair Ranch? I talked with Jeff Stonesifer at the convention and he is
happy for some folks to drop by and have a look.

There are lots of smaller collections of Corvair derelicts... We need to
visit them soon! For example, can someone volunteer to go visit Norm King's
stash near Flint, MI?

Below is what we still need. As you can see, we are essentially done with
1965. Yay!! 1966 is in good shape. Several questions still about 1963 and
1967 though.

1963
====
* Any car with a factory rear seat speaker. (confirm)
* Any car with a Y in group 2. (confirm)
* Any car with a P in group 3. (confirm)
* Any car with factory heater delete.
* Any 700-series sedan with factory rear door armrests.
* Any Oakland car with a K code.

1965
====
* Although we have solid evidence for 5G and 5Y, since these options are so
  rare, please let me know if you find any cars with these codes!

1966
====
* Any Los Angles model 500 sedan with factory headrest bench front seats.
* Any car with factory deluxe front shoulder belts. (confirm)
* Any car with factory seat belt delete (exported cars only). (confirm)

1967
====
* Any sedan with factory non-deluxe rear center seat belt.
* Any car with factory heater delete. (confirm)
* Any car with factory non-deluxe front shoulder belts.
* Any car with factory seat belt delete (exported cars only). (confirm)

Remember, any item you find is worth $20 unless it's marked "confirm"; then
it's worth $10.

Thanks,

tagaccessory codes

(sending same message to Stock Corvair Group, Virtual Vairs, FastVair, and
Corvanatics; likely will also be sent to the Communique)

Hi folks,

A small group of us have done a lot of research over the past several years
to decode the Fisher Body tag accessory codes for 1963, 1965, 1966, and
1967. Other years are also in the works. (The codes were not used after
1967.) However, there are some codes which we still need to either identify
or confirm.

The problem is that these codes tend to be for uncommon options. They also
tend to be on types of Corvairs that folks are not saving, at least not
significant numbers. It's become clear to me that we are in a "now or never"
situation--there are very few of the types of cars we need to see left and
even these will be gone soon. So we need to all work together now before
it's too late. There is no other source for this info other than the cars
which remain.

Here's something to sweeten the deal: If you provide conclusive evidence to
define any of the codes below (except the ones marked "confirm"), you will
receive a $20 gift certificate to the Corvair vendor of your choice. You can
win as many $20 certificates as codes that you define conclusively. Each
question has only one gift certificate associated with it so first come,
first served. If you provide conclusive evidence on any item marked
"confirm", you get a $10 gift certificate. Bonus: If someone beats you to a
$20 code but you are the second person, you will get a $10 certificate for
confirming it.

Note: I reserve the right to correct any mis-statements below about what we
are looking for. I checked the list twice but there is always a chance that
I did not describe a particular item accurately.

Many of the candidate cars are likely not in very good shape and are not
often cars you will see at car shows. So, what I am asking is that you
dig--visit people who you know have a bunch of Corvairs squirreled away on
their property or people who part out cars for a living. Yes, I would love
it if a crew would volunteer to visit the Corvair Ranch, for example. But I
am also talking about those folks who we all know live way out of town
somewhere and they have 20+ Corvairs just sitting around in the weeds.

With winter approaching it may not be feasible for all of you to get this
done right away. But for those who live in warmer climates, please get the
ball rolling!

The data we are looking for is on the last line of the Fisher Body tag,
which is in the engine compartment on the rear frame rail. Remember that
cars built at Willow Run and Van Nuys (Los Angeles) have numerical
separators between the groups of option codes, except for the first group
("1" is omitted).

What you will need to do is to take pictures of the Fisher Body tag and of
the option(s) of interest.

Here is what we are looking for:

1963
====
* Any non-Monza with a factory fold-down rear seat. (confirm)
* Any car with L in group 1. (confirm)
* Any Oakland convertible with a factory power convertible top.

1965
====
* Any car with factory non-deluxe rear seat belts.
* Any car with G in group 5.
* Any car with factory deluxe rear seat belts.
* Any car with factory heater delete. (confirm)

1966
====
* Any model 500 sedan with factory rear door armrests.
* Any Los Angles model 500 sedan with factory headrest bench front seats.
* Any car with factory deluxe front shoulder belts. (confirm)
* Any car with factory seat belt delete (exported cars only). (confirm)

1967
====
* Any sedan with factory non-deluxe rear center seat belt.
* Any car with factory heater delete. (confirm)
* Any car with factory rear seat speaker. (confirm)
* Any car with factory non-deluxe front shoulder belts.
* Any car with factory seat belt delete (exported cars only). (confirm)

I hope you find this fun. It's also very important historical research that
we have to NOW if we are ever going to get the answers!

Thanks,

--Kent
