Corvairs are odd. I have one lifter that clatters if the car has been 
sitting for a while and it takes about five minutes of driving to shut up. 
You might have not let it run for long enough. Also I have found that when 
setting hot if I back off to clack and tighten 1/4 turn it is fine. If I 
tighten another 1/4 turn, some cylinders start missing.

Smarter minds have said that if you let it run a bit, it will smooth out 
but I have just left mine at 1/4 turn in. Always set SBCs at 1/2 turn and 
would wind 6000 without strain. Never have been a high rev person, prefer 
lots of torque over a broad band.
