<VV> manual trans install

HELP!  I've been fighting with this thing all day and am at my wits end.  I'm trying to install a manual transmission into a 140 engine.  I've replaced the input shaft bushing, clutch, pressure plate and input shaft seal.  I have the engine level and the tranny is lined up with the bolt holes just fine.  I get it close but it lacks about an inch before it stops going in.  One thing I can't figure out is when I take the input shaft out of the trans and slide it onto the splines of the clutch, it seems like it's not going in as far as it should because it just barely catches the clutch then seems to bottom out in the cam.  Any suggestions will be gratefully appreciated!!!!
