More seriously white smoke is usually a blown head gasket - in a water pumper.

Oil everywhere could just be a blocked PCV (was a recent thread about the 
dipstick tube extending below the surface of the oil and if the crankcase 
pressurizes a full pan, instant oil..

Did you have an air cleaner on ?

Don't think that any Corvair that can get to the freeway is a crusher 
candidate but from the SBC address you are probably on the left coast.
