If I remember, the front fender antennas of the period, came out the top. 
You removed the ferrule, LOWERED the antenna assy about an inch into the 
fender, and turned the two 'feet' on the antenna base to the vertical, and 
pull it out.
Tying a string on the antenna wire end, helps fish the new lead in place.
