Hey Jim,
Most shifter problems go back to trouble with the shift tube or the pin that attaches it to the tranny.
Drop the tunnel cover to inspect the shift tube assembly, a tube with nylon bushings inside a tube. There is usually far less trouble with the shifter or connection to the tube than the tunbe itself or connection to the tranny.
The bushings ln either end and they may be displaced, worn or missing. Since only one gear seems affected. I'm betting you have a bushing out of place.
Lightly sand to remove corrosion, paint to protect from more, and grease the rod to clean up the bearing surfaces and replace the bushings if needed. On the very back end is a pin that runs crosswise through a hole drilled through the shifter rod. The coupler, pin or rod can be worn. Get a replacement pin from our vendors or a hardware store. If the coupler or shaft holes aren't round, you can braze them up and drill a new hole.
You'll be surprised how much this tightenes up the whole deal.

Jim,
Is this a three speed or 4 speed car?

Ok gurus, I've another question for you. In my newly aquired 64 coupe I
am having a hard time locating 2nd. If I shift nice and slow she usually
goes in with no problem. If I try anything faster than slow it feels like
I'm going right past or in between gears. The shift lever always seems to
end up in a new postion.....only in second. Any ideas as what to look for?
