Once drove from Indiana to Texas pulling a really loaded converted car
trailer carrying all household belongings. In the first trial, the axles
bent so the tires were rubbing the frame. Welded on some rub plates and
squeaked a bit but made the trip.
Never broke 50 mph. Took a while but made it. Endurance racing teaches you
how to be gentle.
OTOH you might just pull the lower shrouds (will run cooler) and hit the
Interstate. Can drive 55-60 if you want to, minimum speed is usually less
than that, is usually the shortest, and has the minimum grades.
Personally have made quite a few long trips with 30+ year old cars, usually
in the left lane. That is one advantage of big, slow turning American
drivetrains, they are designed for long distances.
Might want to invest in the CORSA membership list before you go and a AAA
"century plus" membership. Today cell phones (another reason to stay on
Interstates, secondary road reception may be spotty) make help much closer
than it was.
