An engine stand works for some people, but there are a few drawbacks. The  
first has already been mentioned, but some of the others are: inability to  
install the flywheel, or pressure plate with the engine on the stand. And also  
the need for a few strong backs to lift the engine off the stand when finished  
(and while undoing the bolts holding it to the stand).
