Could be a filter packing up or could be an electrical problem. The way to
find out is by troubleshooting.
However "when the car dies no fuel sprays from the carbs." (I assume that
means no smoke in the venturis when the acellerator is pumped) seems to be
an indicator that it is not electrics (unless there is an electric fuel
pump up front somewhere). Next step is to check for fuel flow past the pump
when cranking after it dies (fuel pressure gauge is even better, an a/c
block provides a place to put the gauge but only if you have one).
Might also run until it dies then pour about 1/2 oz of gas into each carb,
put the air cleaner back on, and see if it fires (will eliminate electrics).
Are a number of things you can do depending on equipment availability and
skill but the question to ask is "how to troubleshoot" and not "what's wrong".
