I resently went through the process here in Kansas to get a title for my sedan. During that experience I looked into the "services" of the some title companies. I found that most of them, in TX, AL and TN, can get you a title but only if the car has never been titled. If it has been titled, anywhere, and that record is still in the DMV system (a downside to our computerized world) they can't help.
 
FWIW, here in Kansas you can get a title for a vehicle more than 35 years old with a bill of sale, even if the car has been titled. The "catch" is that the bill of sale must be between two Kansas residents and the car has to have the VIN inspected to verify that the paperwork matches the vehicle.
