FWIW, Audis built since sometime in 1987 are welded from
galvanized sheet metal, and then hot dip galvanized. Bare
metal on Audis even here in NH rusts very slowly as the zinc
sacrifices itself to save the bare spot. I've never heard a
complaint about weak welds on Audis.
Sheet metal I bought from GM in the early '70s was not
galvanized. However, I believe that the rockers and
undersides of my floor panels were galvanized, or at least
zinc coated somehow (ref. fairy).
On that note, the SciFi channel last night had humorous car
commercial involving a fairy.
