..early carbs have ,like the one's from George's 80hp,have the bowl vent in that protruding 'trough',late carbs it's not drilled,and use 2 smaller holes on each side of the throat;;cutting that piece out may 'improve' airflow,but may cause the choke plate to be ineffective when cold unless you block or restrict the slot in the chokeplate;;it *could*be restricted to provide 'bypass' air instead of adjusting the chokeplate open as per shop manual,and may only be a problem on those REALLY cold days if left as-is--::>)..4 eyes/w/glasses..Tom Z
