I had an engine do this once...turned out to be carbon build up on the
center two pistons. The engine was a fresh rebuild and carboned up in about
5K miles. Local guru was puzzled, but we knocked the carbon off, switched
plugs ("don't you ever run Champion plugs again"), put the heads back on and
never had a bit of trouble again.
