<VV> Non functional carburetor?

Fellow enthusiasts;
My newly installled 110/PG drivetrain (in a '62 sedan) is running well enough now to make the car driveable, but I discovered last night while I was playing with it that I can completely cut off the air supply to the driver-side carburetor with my palm and the engine hardly seems to notice. Doing the same thing on the other carburetor causes the engine to falter to the point that I think it would die if I didn't remove my hand, though I haven't actually killed it to verify that. At any rate, that suggests to me that the driver-side carburetor isn't flowing fuel, at idle at least. A few days ago I had both carburetors apart and blew everything out thoroughly. All passages appeared to be clear. On reassembly, I did notice that the acclelerator pump on the offending carb is non functional. There is some small amount of play in the throttle shafts of both carburetors. I also need new plug wires (the ones on the engine now are at least 5 years old, maybe more). In theory, it's possible that my supposition about the carburetor is wrong. I plan to replace the wires, then take the carburetor apart again and check all passages and get the accelerator pump working. By the way, the car is one that was owned and restored by Bob Heinrich, which I bought from his widow a couple of years after he passed away. According to the log he kept, which came with the car, the carburetors are "68-69 smog carbs with the internal air screw bottomed out and #50 main jets." Not that it matters in this case, but I verified the jet size when I had the carbs apart. By the way, the engine I installed is a fresh rebuild with about 10K miles on it. Anyone have any suggestions about what I should look for in the carburetor that might cause the symptom I've described?
Thanks,
Richard Burger
