Hi Padgett,
You are correct about the positive connected condenser and it is only for
radio ignition noise suppression.
I guess Pertronix did the current calculations and to assure full coil
saturation needs all that current and not to have it limited by the series
impedance of a smaller gauge wire. Yes, a relay would likely be the best
way to assure the best current flow and minimize the stress on the original
Corvair wiring and switches. Replacing a modern relay is a lot less
expensive then replacing the stock Corvair wiring, connectors and
switches. I would probably comply with their guidelines for best performance.
