<VV> Dry Gas - Methanol or Isopropyl ? Some Corvair

Jim,
Isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol) is about 6 times more effective than
methanol though it costs a bit more. Also "Iso" is less corrosive to fuel system
components. It comes with various names such as "Iso-Dri" or
"DryGas-Isopropyl Water Remover". Read the label. If it says "toxic - methanol" it's the
wrong stuff.
Gas tank condensation can occur even in warm weather anytime the humidity
is high and the day/night temperature swing is significant. What happens is
that high humidity air is sucked into the vented tank of the Corvair as the
temp. begins to cool and as the temp drops further that air temp in the tank can
drop below the dewpoint whereupon moisture condenses out of the air and
settles on the top of the gas in the tank. Being heavier, the water condensate
soon settles to the bottom of the tank where it begins to rust/corrode the tank
eventually resulting in fuel leakage from the pin hole leaks at the bottom of
the tank. (Ask me how I know(:-)
So I use it on a regular basis throughout the year. By using an additive
like isopropyl alcohol you enable the gas to absorb the water and distribute
it evenly throughout the tankful of gas. It's only a small fraction of 1% of
the gas so it has no effect on the firing of the engine.
And NO, it is not equivalent to water injection!!

Hi Guys,
Winter and colder temperatures are upon us and so is gas tank condensation.
Which "Dry Gas" is better - Methanol or Isopropyl alcohol based?
