Yep, look what it did for the UK auto industry! Not.
National Health Care would make $1500 per car look like a REALLY good deal. As the stats from other
US-built companies show, it's not the health care that's the problem, it's the cost of certain plans...
But to keep this on topic (and off Talk) I think GM's main problem has been an inability (or an
unwillingness) to provide customers with desirable cars at a reasonable price.
Their (big) trucks are great.... and a very good deal when compared to the competition. But when you're
talking about an all-purpose family sedan, they haven't built anything desirable in a LONG time. And not
only are these cars less desirable than your average Camry or Accord, they are also more expensive and
less reliable. Not a good combination.
I think folks WANT to want an American car. And GM has shown that it can compete with the best of
the high end exotics at a fraction of the price (with the C6 and C6 ZO6) and the Solstice is looking like
they can build a sports car that can compete on both price and performance... but has yet to prove it
can build a solid mid-size sedan. The Impala is likely the best car they've built in years...and it just can't
compete.
