Quickly, yes the engines are the same, sort of like most water-cooled 
overhead valve V-8's are the same. Doesn't mean they are all copies, 
does it? And if they are, you don't see much discussion of it.

The history of VW & Porsche are readily available to anyone who is 
interested, but let's not forget :

1)   In 1926 Tatra introduced the T30,  with a horizontally opposed flat 
four-cylinder air-cooled engine, 1.7-litre 4-cylinder with 35bhp, is 
supposedly the first engine of such a design in the world.

2)   The Copper Cooled Chevrolet of 1923 was, in fact, air cooled just 
as the Corvair is and was named to avoid confusion with the air-cooled 
Franklins.

3)   1940 saw the first modern opposed 6-cylinder engine as part of the 
second generation of Franklin aircraft engines. Today they would be 
called modular engines. Franklin had air-cooled engines from 1905.

4)   And let's not forget the Tucker -- a bare Tucker engine sure has a 
familiar look to it ...
