Hi folks,
What started out as some toothless spider gears has turned into a major good
thing for my car. It's a '66 Corsa Turbo convertible. In the process of
having out local Corvair shop repair the damage in the differential, I had
him slip a set of Larry's 3.08 gears in as well. Wow!!!! What a difference.
The improvement in the car's performance at highway speeds (75-80) is simply
amazing. With my current tires, 3000 RPM gives ca. 70 mph. I know it's
fairly accurate as I checked the speedo a while back with my GPS. Aside
from lower revs at cruising speeds, third gear now becomes a genuine passing
gear when you need more acceleration than just stomping on the gas will
bring. Of course the turbo like the whole setup as it likes to see the
engine loaded. It happily gives full boost with no complaint. Of course,
the taller gears make first gear dogier than it was before but I expected
that. I'll need to see how starting on a steep hill will be before
venturing into that territory.
If you do a lot of high speed cruising and would like to have things less
busy in the butt, treat yourself to a set of 3.08's.
