Simple answer. The thermostats are really only used to warm up the
engine a little more quickly. Perhaps on a below zero day they might
remain closed a little. You can drive it without thermostats as far as
you want.

 They are designed to fail OPEN.

Getting all the information is most of the solution.

Being a newby and sort of dumb concerning automotive subjects, I need to
know if the thermostats would affect the driving of a corvair.  I might
have
to drive one for a few hundred miles and the guy said it needed a
thermostat.  Being an air cooled engine I am puzzled by the thermostat
thing
and wonder if it is essential for driving.
