There is a hose over the rear axle (driver's side) that connects the
steel gas line on the body to the line that goes to the pump.  This can
be rotted and cracked, allowing air into the line.  The higher level in
the tank probably provided enough pressure head that the pump could suck
gas.  If this hose is cracked, you probably will find it wet now that the
tank is full.  Maybe even a moist spot under the car where the gas is
dripping.
