Kurt,the valve springs should compress (although the valve may be stuck in the guide),you may be out of range for the size valve-or you're pushing on the stem keepers...try using a piece of 3/8" black pipe with a 3/8-16 bolt and nut to jack between the head and the two 'lugs' at the block end---if you decide to hit it,I wouldn't hit the jug directly,use a piece of 2x2,wail on that (just don't miss!!)
