<VV> Gas Tank Replacement - Anti Squeak Material

I'm in the process of installing a gas tank in my 1964 Spyder. Can anyone tell me were the anti squeak material is glued to. What are the specific locations and is it glued to the tank or the body of the car? Any other gas tank replacement hints would also be appreciated. Is it possible to remove the filler pipe and make all the hose connections and then install the tank and filler pipe as a unit?
