After my mom died in February I went to her local Honda dealer to get some extra keys for her mid 90s Accord.
Accords of that vintge are often on the top 10 stolen car lists. I had some service records and the registration, Her and my last names are the same, and I had to show my ID. I got the impression the parts guy would not have made those keys (for a 9 year old car) for just anyone.
At the time I wondered if I were a 20 year old minority kid and walked in with just the VIN and the sang the same story, if I'd be turned away, or the cops would have shown up.
If you called a buddy at a dealer you may have had a 'leg up." An interesting test might be to try it for real at a strange dealer.
