Hey guys and gals,
I had a blast yesterday driving the 64 sedan down to the "old White Mills
Hotel" where the mill used to be. The huge stone dam is still in place, along
with a one lane steel bridge built in 1899. Friday and Saturday were "White Mills
Days" and when I showed up in the Corvair saturday they thought I was going
to show the car... its not quite fit for showing, but I DID get a great parking
spot. Our local Fire Department joins up with the Civic League and throws a
grand old time... lots of fried chicken and watermelon, the Democratic and
Republican parties were there to register voters, the newspapers were selling
subscriptions and the EMS were there giving free blood pressure checks. There were
contests: baby, pet, strong-man, watermelon-eating, horse shoe throwing, and
a canoe race that had them passing behind my house... a lot of fun especially
when Cheryl's goats try to figure out how those people are in the river and
why don't they stop and pet them!
I know to our friends on the other side of the pond and to our friends to
the north and south of our nation that this Monday is "just another day"... but
to us "Americans" is a great summer holiday, and to many, nothing more. I
just want to toss a little something out there for some of you to chew on...
Thomas Paine wrote "These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier
and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his
country; but he that stands it now deserves the love and thanks of man and
woman."... he wrote that in 1776, while the founders of this nation were in the
midst of some very treasonist acts against the British Crown (sorry Alan)....
there were 50-some-odd fellows sign a piece of paper that was dated 229 years
ago, and they really put their necks on the line by doing so... they might not
recognize most of this country today if they were given the foresight to do
so, but they would recognize the spirit, the spunk, of many of our citizens. I
think many of our group here would have done as our founding fathers (and
mothers) had done, which brings me to my insane question... Of those founding
fathers (not just the signers of the Declaration of Independence but all of them),
who could you see driving/owning a Corvair? I can easily see Thomas Jefferson
with one... just his love of gadgets tells me this much... Ben Franklin would
be an EM fan, probably a convertible... since he WAS a ladies' man..... Paul
Revere would have a Spyder or a Corsa, something fast... maybe even a Yenko....
silver plated, of course! Alexander Hamilton would probably have a 500
sedan...
All of this is in the spirit of fun, and I'm not trying to make light of the
Founding Fathers... this country came at a great sacrifice, and still does. I
don't want this to turn into a political discussion about current events, even
though Thomas Paines words still ring true today... I just want you to take a
moment to look at what you know about the beginings of our country and think
who would be a Corvair owner if he (or she) lived today...
As for the "Thanks" that Thomas Paine speaks, keep that in mind while you
grill out, watch fire works, and have a paid holiday (for some of you)... the
freedom came at a high price with a long war here on our soil... (or actually
soil we chased the natives off of, but thats a whole nuther story).
Be safe, watch the fireworks and don't blow off a hand, thank a Veteran, and
God Bless America!
Later,
