Tuesday morning greeted us with some rain but it all ended by about 9 AM.
Once the rain stopped, the cars for the Concours and display were set up. There
were lots of really nice cars in that parking lot. The Chuckster and Darth
had the high score in concours. Kevin Willson took home a trophy for the
display. He was somewhat excited at the banquet when his name was called.
Wednesday was the econo run, Jim Dallas was my navigator. We went through
some very nice countryside with lots of roller coaster hills. This was my first
as a driver. I navigated in Carlisle with Doug Macintosh. I remembered most
of the "tricks" Doug taught me. I guess it paid off since I finished first in
class with a little over 37 mpg.
Thursday was the rally, Terry Kalp was my navigator. Once again we went
through some nice countryside. Terry had to remind me that it would be easier to
look for signs if we weren't going so fast. I just had to make up for the slow
speeds of the econo run. Once again, I used some to the things I learned in
Carlisle when I navigated for Larry Claypool. After the rally, we were
talking over the answers with other participants. I didn't think we did that well,
but when the scores were tabulated, we finished 3rd.
When I wasn't driving my car, I spent most of my time either in the indoor
vendor area or at the outside swap meet. I enjoyed Lon's company and especially
his stories. He has so many, not all Corvair related, and they are all
entertaining. Outside, Rob Landers and newly elected Central Director Tim Mahler
had a tarp set up to sell their parts. It was sort of a social gathering
center. While hanging around the host hotel, I visited with old Corvair friends
and made new ones. Just about every lunch and diner was shared with these
friends. There was also some sharing of beverages in the evening, which really
got the stories going.
Of course I spent money with the vendors. I purchased a LM Corvair trailer
hitch and wiring harness from Bill Pierson, a rear sway bar from Jeff Rapp, a
spring loaded belt tensioner and other assorted goodies from Lon, a ball cap
from Corsa, a couple of shirts from Kevin, and a few items from Cal.
