The following three publications list the Differential Identification Codes:
The CORSA Tech Guide
Bob Helt's "The Classic Corvair"
The Junkyard Primer
Code "AC" identifies a 3.27posi, and "AD" identifies a 3.55posi for a manual tranny. This code is stamped on the passenger side of the differential where it mates up with the tranny, sometimes it is barely legible. A '65 diff, if you're looking for a concours resto, has only four bolt holes to mate up with the tranny, a '66 and up will have 6 holes. Your '65 tranny will mate up fine with the 6 hole '66 and later diff, you just leave the middle holes empty.

Subject: <VV> 65 Posi Differential Numbers
I'm looking for numbers or codes to determine what would be positraction unit
for a 1965 Corvair 4 speed. A guy has many Corvair units from years ago and he
cannot remember how to tell them apart. I want to buy one from him and don't
want to make a mistake. Also ...where do you look for the number? Thanks.
