Frank,
The 1964 Spyder is the only Spyder that can be identified by its VIN. 1962 &
63 were Monzas with the Spyder option. Your VIN should start with 40667
followed by a letter and the production number. "4" is for 1964; "06" designates
the Spyder; "67" is the convertible and the letter will tell you the
manufacturing plant.
All Spyders had the 150 turbo from the factory and the engine number will end
with "YR." In 1964, the engine displacement went from 145 CID to 164 CID but
they chose to keep the same engine number. I don't know why. The part
number on the 1964 turbo ID plate should be 3840830. Another way to distinguish
the 1964 turbo engine from previous years is the fan. In 1964, they went to a
magnesium fan with (I think) 11 vanes. The 1962-63 fan had 16 vanes. There
are other differences.
I am sure that the rest of the gang will warn you about all the usual rust
areas to look for but the biggest concerns will be the rockers, the floor pan
and around the windshield.
Good luck.
