I think it was Will Rodgers who said; "I only know what I read in the
newspapers." I must, as a prefacing caveat to my following advice, paraphrase Will
Rodgers and say that I only know what I read because I am not an automotive
engineer, a race driver (professional or amateur) and not even much at all of a
grease monkey. However, germane to this discussion, I think it should be
pointed out that on the '60-'63 Corvairs (the ones I call "earliers") GM relied
upon a hydraulic stop in the rear shocks to limit rebound. As such, the
installation of after-market shocks can be problematic. I believe this issue is
addressed in the Tech Guide. I think it is recommended that after-market shocks be
shimmed with certain washers. Anyway, forewarned is fair-warned. Check the
Tech Guide for the word from our experts.
