Everett,

I am not familiar with your model car in particular but many on board 
computers have the ability to communicate the error messages without a code reader.  
I had a Buick and a Bronco that would blink the error codes through the 
dashboard lights when you jumpered specific contacts on terminals.  You would then 
look up the codes in your manual and interpret them.  Have you read all the 
info in your Clymers book.  It may tell you how to get your car to talk to you.  
Be aware that the codes may be misleading.  The problem my Bronco had was the 
fuel pressure regulator but the error codes indicated a bad Oxygen sensor and 
a couple of other things as well.
