Here is the best explanation I've heard:
http://www.guarding-our-earth.com/amsoil/seals.shtml
What has been my experience? All my turbo cars and all of my (4 stroke) aircooled cars get synthetic for its anti-coking and high temp viscosity retention. I have
noted moderately easier starting in cold weather, but no other significant improvement. I have also NOT noticed more leaks except in my British cars. Now Brit
cars tend to seep a bit anyway, but every single British car I've used synthestic in dumps oil all over the place... a problem which goes away (back to the seep
stage... when it stops you're out of oil!) after a couple of changes of dino oil .
