i think rochester started using those springs when they went to a viton tip 
needle. it was needed at times to help overcome slight sticking of viton to the 
seat. i kinda remember a bulletin on replacement needles for industrial 
engines early on because of wear problems of the steel needles from vibration or 
something.  man that was a long time ago. anyhow if needle has viton tip it 
really should have that spring. regards, tim colson
