This reminds of the first time I tried to adjust the newly installed points on our Corvair. I had never done it before and I was paranoid beyond measure. I made all the adjustments using my newly purchased feeler gauge and I could get the car to start but not idle. I figured I had the gap wrong. I readjusted that gap for hours trying to get it to idle but it wouldn't. I finally gave up and put everything back on the engine that I had removed - air cleaner etc. Just for kicks I turned the key and it started and idled perfectly. What the...??? It took me a few minutes to figure out I had disconnected a vacuum line to the carbs and that MIGHT affect idle. Hey, I was young and new to working on cars.

Also when troubleshootng I was looking for a problem. One does not look for
distributor problems with the cap on. They take the cap off and examine
things inside, including cycling the vac adv with a vac pump. Everything
appeared normal and worked normal with the cap off.
