It sounds like you think it is gear oil from the transaxle, since you
mentioned the clutch chatter. What does the oil smell like? Gear oil has a
distinctive smell that still reminds me of my youth when I replaced many an
input shaft seal before I realized that a bad pilot bearing was causing the
seal to leak.
