mine.  The lever is about 2" from the heat control in low and about 2 1/4" 
from it in high.  I guess Early PowerGlides have tighter shifters than the 
lates.

However lates had two different shifters, a straight line ratchet shifter 
for early lates and a Low/Reverse offset for late lates. This permitted the 
critical Drive to Neutral downshift to keep the engine running at 
stoplights without overshooting and causing a rear end collision.
