I do it this way:  The intake valves are directly below the three aluminum 
elbows that are on the underside of the intake manifold (these would be the 
intake runners).  The exhaust valves are directly above the exhaust tubes.  Never 
fails.

valves is the intake and which is the exhaust going in the direction 
from rear housing cover to the bell housing?
