Speaking of trouble with oil coolers, I have two that I cleaned in a parts
cleaner bucket that got contaminated with the grit from other parts. I have
never used them, but wonder if anyone has successfully flushed out an old oil cooler. I've been aftraid to use mine because I felt grit could be difficult to flush out successfully.

Some source I consider authoratative (Chevy Power or maybe one of the Carroll Smith books) says never use an oil cooler from a trashed engine.
But I'd probably use a rare one after several soaking/heating/flushing cycles. Just yesterday I was reading about an industrial equipment manual about commisioning used equipment for use with new hi-tech transformer oil. Part of the flushing cleaning process was to use oil hotter than it would see in service, and with a fluid velocity about 2X greater than it would see in service. Kind of made sense.
