Speaking of trouble with oil coolers, I have two that I cleaned in a parts 
cleaner bucket that got contaminated with the grit from other parts.  I have 
never used them, but wonder if anyone has successfully flushed out an old oil cooler.  I've been aftraid to use mine because I felt grit could be difficult to flush out successfully.

Some source I consider authoratative (Chevy Power or maybe one of the Carroll Smith books) says never use an oil cooler from a trashed engine.
But I'd probably use a rare one after several soaking/heating/flushing cycles.  Just yesterday I was reading about an industrial equipment manual about commisioning used equipment for use with new hi-tech transformer oil.  Part of the flushing cleaning process was to use oil hotter than it would see in service, and with a fluid velocity about 2X greater than it would see in service. Kind of made sense.
